Friends of the Cruiser Olympia Adds New Board Member

Philadelphia, PA. — The President of the Friends of the Cruiser Olympia announced today that they have added a new Board Member to their tax exempt, non-profit organization dedicated to restoring and preserving the National Treasure-the Cruiser Olympia at Penn’s Landing, Philadelphia.

Captain S.Kerr Smith, USNR (Ret.) ’72 is a graduate of the U.S.Naval Academy serving from 1972 to 1980 on the USS Glennon (DD-840), USS Mount Whitney (LCC-20) and USS Miller (FF-1091). He retired as a Captain USNR in 1995. Captain Smith began his civilian career in 1980 at Stone& Webster Engineering Corp. and was principal engineer, Nuclear Group on the River Bend Project. He held key positions at Cochran Environmental Systems, Henkeis & McCoy, ACT Engineers and Pickering, Corts & Summerson. He is currently in his third year as President of the Philadelphia Chapter of the US Naval Academy Alumni Association.

Jay Richman, President of the Friends of the Cruiser Olympia said that he was pleased to announce that their Board of Directors is expanding, and “we are pleased that Capt.Kerr Smith, USNR (Ret.) will join us in our pursuit to restore this grand historic ship landmark”.

“We are very honored to have someone of Captain Smith’s qualifications to assist us in our mission to restore this national landmark,” Bruce Harris, executive director of The Friendssaid. “The Captain will be assisting us right away in our capital campaign to raise over $22M to restore and preserve the Cruiser Olympia for future generations,” Harris said
