Volunteer

Volunteers are integral to the success of any non-profit organization. We do not have a lot of volunteer work on the ship at present. However there are several things you can do now to help protect OLYMPIA.

We are currently in need of individuals gifted with fundraising, web design, public/media relations, or marketing experience. If you have a naval, engineering, ship systems, or maritime background we would also like to hear from you. Please, Contact Us at your earliest convenience to join the crew!

Those with museum studies, conservation, or archival education backgrounds can make a valuable contribution as we make plans for OLYMPIA’s future. It goes without saying that those with a love of history should let us know how they would like to help. We are building a volunteer database to secure OLYMPIA’s future.

Interested?   Contact Us and tell us about yourself and your area of interest or expertise.  If you have an up-to-date resume or CV, please send it to us. We look forward to hearing from you!

  1. Friends of the Cruiser Olympia,

I became interested in seeking information on the Cruiser Olympia after viewing pictures of her model at the BlueJacket Shipcrafters’ Facebook page. I was unaware Olympia was still afloat and teetering on the edge of scrapping and obscurity.

I am a retired U.S. Navy veteran, having proudly served over 33 years for the United States. Although retired from the military since 2005, I work full time to support my family. My military background includes military police, law enforcement, physical security and force protection duties, although I began my career as a steam propulsion plant engineer.

I greatly desire to join the ranks of the Friends of the Cruiser Olympia. I would like to assist in any way I can to preserve this piece of living U.S. History! Please let me know how best to accomplish this assistance.

Thank you for your Cruiser Olympia efforts to date! Best wishes.

  2. An ex-Philadelphian and retired Navy Chief. I’ve been aboard Olympia a few times. Can’t bear to see her die. Small donation sent-in . I will follow progress and if saved; I may actually help with on-board, hands-on restoration/activities. Long involved with historic railway preservation.

I’d hate to see Olympia sink at her mooring as that (museum) Soviet Sub did in Providence, R.I. two years ago.

  3. I’m a volunteer on board USS New Jersey and was shocked to read that Olympia may be lost to Philadelphia. I’ve lived here all my life, have been to visit many times and couldn’t imagine Penn’s Landing without her.

I’d like to offer my help. On the New Jersey I’m a member of the maintenance teams. My profession is software consulting primarily developing applications for process automation at the departmental level.

If I can be of service please contact me at the Email address above.

  4. I heard about your efforts to save this ship this morning on a radio program in Norfolk, Va. I am very interested to see if I have anything that might be of use. I am an active duty QMC who is also very interested in history…especially this ship!

    Thank you,
